This guide is for students and staff of the University of Nigeria, whether you are on the main Nsukka campus, at the Enugu campus (UNEC) or doing clinical work at Ituku-Ozalla. Compuvilla has sold computers from 76 Zik Avenue, Uwani, Enugu since 2006, and we have put together practical advice to help you choose a laptop for life at UNN. For general information about delivery to the town, see our Nsukka page.

Choosing a laptop by faculty

Engineering, architecture and CAD. If you use AutoCAD, SolidWorks, MATLAB or similar tools, memory and processor matter most. Ask us for laptops with more RAM and a solid-state drive, and tell us exactly which software your department uses. A larger screen also makes drawings easier to work with.

Medicine, nursing and health sciences. Medical students at UNEC and Ituku-Ozalla spend much of their time reading textbooks and journals, preparing presentations and writing reports. A light laptop with good battery condition and a comfortable screen is often more useful than raw power, because it travels with you between lectures, the hospital and your lodge.

Arts, law, education and social sciences. Most of your work is typing, research and presentations. A dependable laptop with a solid-state drive and a good keyboard will do the job well without stretching your budget. Students running SPSS for projects should mention it so we can check the laptop handles it comfortably.

Sciences and programming. Computer science, statistics and other science students often run code editors, data tools and sometimes virtual machines. More memory makes multitasking smoother. If you plan to learn app or web development, tell us, and we will suggest suitable machines.

Business, accounting and management. Spreadsheets, accounting software and presentations are the core here. A business-grade laptop with a full-size keyboard, including a number pad if you do lots of data entry, is a sensible choice.

Budget tips for students

Decide what you really need before you look at what is newest. A solid-state drive and enough memory usually make a bigger difference to everyday speed than the newest processor. Spend on the parts that match your course, and avoid paying for features you will never use. See current prices in our shop, and send us your budget on WhatsApp so we can suggest the best options within it.

Battery life for lectures and power cuts

Many UNN students study in hostels and lodges where power supply can be unreliable, from campus hostels to lodges around Odenigwe, Hilltop and Odim Gate. Lecture halls do not always have sockets for everyone either. Ask us about the battery condition of any laptop you are considering, and consider a power bank or a small inverter if you study late.

Buying for your final-year project

Your final-year project is the most important document of your degree. Choose a laptop that can comfortably run your analysis or design software, and back up your work regularly to a flash drive or cloud storage. Do not wait until the last weeks before submission to buy, because you need time to set up your software and get comfortable.

Parents buying for a child at UNN

Many of our customers are parents buying a first laptop for a son or daughter starting at UNN. Tell us your child’s course and your budget, and we will explain the options in plain language. Remember that our warranty does not cover screens, drops or liquid spills, so a padded bag is a good addition.
